NEW DELHI: IAS officer Sriram Venkitaraman has received a setback in the K M Basheer death case. The Supreme Court on Friday rejected the appeal filed by Sriram against the High Court verdict that the charge of homicide will stand in the case. The Supreme Court, which stated that a trial needs to be conducted in the case, added that it should be checked in the trial whether the evidence will stand in court.

On April 13, the High Court had ordered that the charge of homicide against Sriram would stand. The High Court issued the order on the plea filed by the government challenging the trial court's order to drop the charge of homicide. Sriram then approached the Supreme Court against this. In his appeal, Sriram stated that there was no evidence to charge him with murder.

According to Sriram, the case against him will not stand as the scientific test report in the chargesheet submitted by the investigating team showed no trace of alcohol in his body. Sriram had argued in the High Court that this was only a case under the Motor Vehicle Department.
