MADURAI: Eight people were killed in a fire in the sleeper coach of the Lucknow-Rameswaram train which was halted at the Madurai railway station. 20 people are undergoing treatment in the hospital. The incident happened at five o'clock in the morning.
According to reports the deceased were natives of Uttar Pradesh. The fire broke out in a train carrying tourists from Lucknow on the 17th. The accident occurred on the way back after visiting the Padmanabhapuram palace in Kanyakumari and various temples in the district.
The preliminary conclusion is that the gas cylinder exploded while cooking on the train. District collector Sangeeta is heading the investigation. The Collector said that efforts are being made to identify the dead bodies.
