KOTTOOR: Children of the forest surprised actor Suresh Gopi who arrived for Onakkodi distribution. The tribals prepared a grand welcome for the actor who arrived at the Pothode settlement colony in Kottoor. The actor came for the inauguration of a garments donation function organized under the aegis of Mookambika Devotees Trust. Mookambika temple priest Subramanya Adiga was the chief guest.

After the reception, while drinking the tender coconut water provided by the residents of Pothode, Suresh Gopi noticed the straw provided with it. The all-natural straw made from Eera stalks took the superstar by storm. He immediately called his personal assistant and asked him to wash the Eera stalk that he and Subrahmanya Adiga had used to drink the tender coconut water and put it in the car. All those who were watching were surprised to hear this. Suresh Gopi responded that the use of such natural materials should be imparted to the city dwellers. He also informed the residents that he would give full support for it.

Anything from straw to mats can be made with Eera

Although it belongs to the bamboo family, the people from the ooru call this plant Eera. They mostly grow in watery areas inside the forest. Products like Vatti, Muram and Mats are also manufactured from Eera. People who sleep on Eera mats are less prone to back pain. The Eera mat will also give one a special feeling of freshness once they wake up. Eera stalks are used by tribals even to carry water from streams to villages.

"Manufacturing of items with Eera is not done much in the ooru as people go for NREGA work. However, if you come to the Kottoor Kani market on Saturdays and Wednesdays, you can buy the products'' - Willian Kani.
