THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The opposition cried foul at the government’s claim of successfully completing the distribution of free Onam kits to 6.07 lakh people including yellow card holders and inmates of orphanages.
According to the opposition, the government with its uneven distribution of Onam kits has caused starvation for many people during this year’s Onam season.
LDF also fought back with allegation saying it was the cheap tactics from UDF which was the reason for the Election Commission putting a ban on the distribution of kits in Kottayam district. With this, the Puthuppally election got a new subject in Onam kit to debate. The UDF also boycotted the special kit announced by the government as Onam gifts for MLAs and MPs. Their refusal is a rebuttal for the government's ineptness to not provide the same kit to the poor sections of society.
Onam kit distribution started on Wednesday and the topic easily attained controversy for the delay in distribution it made. This year’s onam kit was reduced to just 5,87,691 AAY card holders and inmates of welfare institutions. The government earlier planned to complete Kit distribution by 27th August but was forced to go for another two days due to the delay in acquiring certain food items.
KPCC president K Sudhakaran lashed out at the government's incompetence in providing kits in a timely manner. “ For CPM, onam is a myth, so it is of no need for them to provide kit on time,” Sudhakaran said.
