THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the Lok Sabha elections just a few months away, the Puthuppally by-election will be crucial for all three fronts. The Puthuppally result may be the main factor in boosting the confidence of the fronts. The assembly session will resume within two days after the result. The vote percentage in the by-election will also affect the performance of the ruling and opposition parties in the House.

The Left Front will be on the defensive if it faces a massive setback like in Thrikkakkara. The UDF will then use the victory as a weapon to repeat the allegations against the government and attack the ruling party till the Lok Sabha elections. Meanwhile, even a major drop in majority in the Puthuppally by-election to elect Oommen Chandy's successor would be a setback for the Congress. It may also pave the way for the crisis to flare up amid growing unrest among the leadership. It may also influence further activities of the UDF going into the Lok Sabha elections. BJP is hoping to put up a better performance in Puthuppally. If so, it will boost their confidence in the Lok Sabha elections.

The CPM is of the opinion that it has thwarted the UDF's plan to pull off an easy victory in Puthuppally. It also believes that the party will have an advantage if Jaick C. Thomas manages to put up a strong fight in the constituency. The CPM is also of the opinion that it has been able to successfully manage the allegations raised by MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan by ignoring them.
