NEW DELHI: It is reported that the central government is likely to introduce the ‘One Nation, One Election’ bill in the special session of Parliament to be convened from September 18 to 22.

Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Pralhad Joshi, on Thursday, gave details about a special session of parliament planned from September 18 to 22. The sudden call for a session triggered doubts about the government’s plan to table a bill that aims to hold Lok Sabha and Assembly elections together.

Pralhad Joshi on his Twitter page said the intent of the special session was to carry out fruitful discussions and debates. However, the minister wriggled out from specifying the real intent behind scheduling a special session in parliament. The government previously attempted to bring a special session last month but was suppressed by the intensifying debates over Manipur in the parliament. Earlier too, the government has mooted many plans to bring the 'ONE NATION, ONE ELECTION' plan to the parliament. Even a law commission was made to study the relevance of this scheme.

Meanwhile, the Centre on Thursday informed the Supreme Court about plans to conduct elections in Jammu and Kashmir anytime. The Centre's statement came during the hearing of a batch of petitions challenging the abrogation of Article 370. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed this before the Constitution Bench of the Supreme Court. However, the final decision on the election will be taken by the Election Commission and the State Poll Panel.
