KOLKATA: College authorities have asked students to submit a consent form not to enter the campus wearing torn jeans. Kolkata's Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose College has given a strange instruction to its graduate students. Parents have also been instructed to ensure that the students give their consent before starting the first semester classes. Ripped jeans were banned on the grounds that they were indecent and obscene in the educational institution.
The consent letter states that 'During the period of study in the college, never enter the campus wearing torn/artificially torn jeans or indecent clothes'. It has been decided not to grant entry to those who do not sign it. Last year also there was an instruction not to come to the college wearing immodest clothes, but majority of the students did not take it seriously. This is when it was decided to tighten the law this time. Strict disciplinary action will be taken if the order is violated after giving consent. 'Dignity' in dress is also required to be observed by employees.
The college authorities say that obtaining consent does not in any way infringe upon the right of students to wear whatever they like and they are free to wear whatever they like outside the campus. Meanwhile, opposition to the college's decision has been raised from many quarters.
