NEW DELHI: Ruling and opposition leaders have been made members of the committee formed to submit recommendations on the central policy of one nation, one election. An eight-member panel has been appointed in the committee formed under the chairmanship of former President Ram Nath Kovind to study electoral reforms.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Congress Lok Sabha Party Leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Former Congress Leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, 15th Finance Commission Chairman NK Singh, Former Lok Sabha Secretary General Subhash Kashyap, Senior Advocate Harish Salve and Former Chief Vigilance Commissioner Sanjay Kothari have been included in the committee. Union Law Ministry Secretary Niten Chandra will hold the post of secretary of the committee. Union Minister of State for Law Arjun Ram Meghwal has also been included as a special invitee.
Central government formed a committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind to study the holding of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha elections together after calling a special session of parliament for just five days from 18th to 22nd of this month. There is no history of any of the former presidents becoming the chairman of a committee under the government. The BJP points out that Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections were held simultaneously till 1967. Rumours that the general election will be announced early are also strong as the Center hurriedly convened the Parliament session.
