Those born in the 1990s cannot have a childhood without hearing the name Parle G. Parle G is one of the biscuit brands that influenced that generation so much. The hard work of the Chauhan family is behind Parle G becoming one of the best-selling biscuits in the world. Parle G was started in 1928. Today it has a turnover of US$ 1.9 billion. The company also operates factories in eight countries.
Parle G was started in 1928 by Mohanlal Dayal Chauhan from Gujarat. To tell the truth, the company was started in a stable. Mohanlal started his biscuit company in Villa Parle. That is why the name of the biscuit is called Parle G.
Mohanlal had the idea of becoming an entrepreneur himself during the days when India was under British rule. That's why he shifted his residence to Mumbai. Then he started a confectionery business. But Mohanlal Dayal also had to face tough competition from British snacks companies. But he was not ready to give up. He approached Parsis for help. With their help, Mohanlal started bakery products. Various products like bun, bread, rusk, nankadai etc. were brought to the people. He took the revolutionary decision of bringing German technology to India at a cost of Rs.60,000. It should be remembered that this decision was before independence.
Mohanlal introduced Parle G Biscuits as an alterntive to expensive British snacks. Parle G also ventured into the production of soft drinks. Drinks like Thumbs Up, Gold Spot, Limca and Frooty were born. These were a huge blow to the American giant Coca-Cola.
Today, the third generation handles the business of Parle G. Mohanlal Dayal's grandson Vijay Chauhan owns the company. The Parle G family has a net worth of US$ 5.5 billion. The company distributed 30 million biscuit packets during the Covid period.
