NEW DELHI: UGC directs universities not to print students' Aadhaar numbers on graduation and provisional certificates. The UGC's intervention follows reports that some states are considering printing the Aadhaar number on the certificates. In the order, UGC Secretary Manish Joshi directed that no institution holding the Aadhaar number should make it public. Institutions of higher education should strictly follow the rules and regulations of UIDAI.

Earlier in 2017 UGC issued a directive that required students' photographs and Aadhaar numbers on graduation certificates to prevent fake versions of the UGC certificate. This directive has been reversed.
