KOTTAYAM: The controversy surrounding Oommen Chandy's treatment, which began with the announcement of the Puthupally by-elections escalated into a heated verbal feud among political leaders.

Initially, CPM State Secretary MV Govindan publicly condemned suicide during the campaign. However, behind the scenes, the issue persisted. An audio recording featuring DCC Secretary Vijayakumar and a Congress leader from Pallikathodu circulated widely, alleging that Oommen Chandy was denied medical treatment. Even leaders who travelled to Bengaluru were purportedly prevented from meeting him. KC Joseph issued a statement denying these claims. As the audio went viral on the internet just before the election day, Oommen Chandy released a public statement. In response, it was argued that the fake audio was part of an ongoing campaign against Oommen Chandy, even after his passing.

Nevertheless, Minister VN Vasavan's response disclosed the names of Congress leaders responsible for creating the audio. When questioned about why the Congress wasn't investigating and taking action, Vasavan also mentioned the Congress members who had filed complaints against Oommen Chandy in the solar case. Opposition leader VD Satheesan argued that the treatment controversy was merely a diversion tactic, as the CPM lacked substantive issues to discuss. Additionally, it was noted that the police had recently registered a cyberattack case against Jake C Thomas' wife, Geethu.

There are indications that disciplinary measures will be taken against the Congress leaders involved in the audio controversy. Some are also voicing concerns that the campaign including the opposition leader failed to give proper consideration to senior leaders.
