Nowhere is it said that the teachers have to take out of their own pockets and borrow from the country to provide lunch to the school children. But things have been like that for years in many schools in the state. All mid-day payments by made by head teachers have not been paid by the Government on time. Teachers' organizations say that they cannot continue like this after the debt has increased. Since it is the subject of children's lunch, one might think that drastic action would be a great sin, but so far they have forgiven. But many people have decided that they can't stand it anymore. Rs 130 crores is to be paid by the government to the school teachers. The saddest thing is that the government is not saying a word about the distribution of mid-day meals even when it is in dire straits.
The school lunch program is in effect not only here but in other states as well. It is going on in the neighbouring Tamil Nadu in a better way than here. In this case, the share is still paid at the same rate that was established eight years ago. The payment is set at between Rs. 6 and Rs. 8 per child, depending on the number of children. Everyone is aware that this is a nation where even a cup of tea costs more than ten rupees. It is a matter that the Education Department and the Government are aware of. However, there is no action to revise the rate or to pay the amount calculated in the respective month itself. As the distribution of lunch is the responsibility of the primary teachers, they arrange the funds. The children do not go hungry in the afternoon because of the help of well-wishers, PTA officials and local dignitaries. Besides, even a great wizard can't prepare food for a child for six or eight rupees given by the government. It should also be remembered that the state is not alone in implementing the mid-day meal programme. Sixty per cent of the cost is borne by the Centre. The state needs to find only forty per cent. A state government with an annual budget of more than a lakh crore does not need to borrow money from anyone to raise children. Unfortunately, the government is now in a bad state where it has to blame for everything. It is recommended to give an egg once a week and milk on another day to ensure nutrition for the children. This is a unique scheme of the state government. But what is left after providing eggs and milk with the government share of six or eight rupees? Only rice is given free by the government. Even for cooking gas and vegetables for cooking food, money has to be found from the allocation fixed by the government. The teachers' organizations have informed the government that if the sum of 130 crore rupees for June, July and August are not paid, there will be a situation where the mid-day meal scheme will have to be stopped. Campaigns have also been formulated on this issue. Don't let things get to the point where the children also go on strike after them because their lunch was stopped.
