KOTTAYAM: The results of the Puthupally by-election will be announced soon. According to the latest report, UDF candidate Chandy Oommen got 72946 votes. Chandy got the Puthupally constituency with a majority of 40,478 votes. LDF candidate Jaick C Thomas got 32,886 votes. In the 2021 assembly elections, Jaick lost by 9044 votes when he contested against Oommen Chandy in Puthupally.
Meantime, UDF candidate Chandy Oommen had announced that he will attain a record majority in Puthupally when counting was progressing. '49044 +' he wrote on Facebook two hours after the votes were started counting. Chandy Oommen has surpassed the all-time record achieved by Oommen Chandy in Puthupally. In the 2011 elections, Oommen Chandy's highest majority in the constituency was against CPM's Suja Susan George by a margin of 33,255 votes.
Chandy Oommen was leading in the first hours of counting of votes. Jaick C Thomas was far behind in the places strongly influenced by the LDF. Chandy Oommen created a big wave in Ayarkunnam where Jaick and the LDF advanced last time. The BJP is nowhere in the picture at all. The LDF leaders had said right after the polls that Jaick would win if the BJP's votes were not transferred to the UDF. BJP candidate Lijin Lal was able to secure only 5654 votes as per the present report.
