KOTTAYAM: Congress leadership had announced Chandy Oommen as their candidate on the 8th of last month, the same day Puthuppally by-elections were announced. Chandy Oommen, who is going to reach the Legislative Assembly after achieving a historic victory in Puthuppally after a month, has another special feature.
That distinction is that he is the UDF MLA with the highest majority in this assembly. Chandy Oommen won with a majority of 37,719 votes. Chandy's lead was increasing every second since the counting of votes started. At one point, the lead had crossed forty thousand but reached 37,719 in the final figures.
In the 2021 assembly elections, many MLAs of the Congress reached the assembly with only a small majority. UDF's highest majority was 35,208 votes won by Muslim League's P Ubaidullah in Malappuram. League's own PK Kunhalikutty came in second with 30,596 votes in Vengara, while Congress's CR Mahesh who contested in Karunagappally got the highest majority. Mahesh won with a majority of 29,208 votes.
Chandy Oommen is climbing the steps of the Legislative Assembly with a historic victory in his maiden election, bypassing the majority of all of them. Chandy Oommen has been ranked in the top ten in the majority of MLAs in the 15th Legislative Assembly. He is ranked 8th in this list. The assembly has 12 MLAs with a majority of over 35,000. Of these, two are UDF and the rest are LDF MLAs.
