THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Before installing AI cameras, only 20 out of the 220 cameras installed by the Motor Vehicle Department with the assistance of Keltron to detect traffic violations were operational. Currently only the AI cameras are functioning.
These cameras were deployed across the state at a cost of Rs 70 crore to identify instances of speeding and signal light violations. A central control room was established in Ernakulam and staff were appointed to manage it. The traffic fines were prepared by MVD officials and subsequently imposed.
However, these cameras had the drawback of being unable to capture clear images at night and during rainy conditions. It was initially decided to address these issues before implementing AI cameras but this plan was not executed.
Furthermore, many camera poles were damaged in car accidents causing the cameras to shift position due to the impact of thunder resulting in them capturing nearby buildings and their surroundings. A decision was made to relocate the control room from Ernakulam and make arrangements to install cameras in the control rooms of the districts but this decision was also not implemented.
