RABAT: The death toll from the powerful earthquake that hit Morocco last night has exceeded 600.

The US Geological Survey reported that the 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck 72 kilometers southwest of the tourist hotspot of Marrakesh at 11:11 p.m. on Friday.

Tremors also wreaked havoc in the coastal areas of Rabat, Casablanca, and Essaouira. According to the latest figures released by the Home Department, 632 people died in the earthquake. More than half of those killed were people from Hausa and Taroudant provinces.

329 people were injured. According to the ministry, 51 of them are in critical condition. Electricity has been stopped in many provinces. Heavy damage is also reported in many areas. A good number of buildings are still on the edge of collapsing.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over the Moroccan earthquake. In a social media note, the Prime Minister said that India is ready to provide all possible help during this crisis.
