MARRAKESH: The death toll from the earthquake in the African country of Morocco has reached 1037. Many people are still reportedly trapped underground. The rescuers intensified their search for them.
An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale occurred at around 11 pm on Friday. Many buildings including historical monuments were destroyed. The earthquake happened when people were sleeping. Marrakesh, a heritage site which is also a tourist destination, was the main area affected by the earthquake. Rescue workers are unable to reach many places. Hence the death toll is likely to rise further. Many people from other countries are also trapped in the disaster zone. Various countries of the world have offered aid to Morocco.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced all possible assistance will be provided to Morocco. In his speech at the G20 summit, Modi said that the entire world community stands with Morocco in this time of suffering.
