THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Disregarding Speaker A N Shamseer's instructions, members of the ruling party, including ministers disrupted the speech of Leader of the Opposition V D Satheesan plunging the Legislative Assembly into chaos yesterday.

During the consideration of an urgent motion notice regarding the abduction and torture of a sleeping girl in Aluva, Satheesan criticized the police in his speech which led to a noisy reaction from the ministers and others. Satheesan was able to continue his speech after the opposition protested in front of the speaker. Following the Congress members' walkout, Deputy Leader of the Opposition PK Kunjalikutty rose to speak, and Minister J Chinchurani demanded an explanation for Satheesan's speech. This prompted the Congress members to return to the center of the House and create a ruckus.

Meanwhile, the Speaker became angry with Minister V Shivankutty for causing disturbance. A heated exchange of words ensued between the ruling and opposition members. Kunjalikutty questioned why there was so much fuss over minor matters when the minister could speak after the walkout. When Kunjalikutty asked if he should not give his speech and make time for the minister, the opposition also erupted in uproar. Despite the Speaker's repeated instructions, the members who had walked out did not return to their seats. The Speaker questioned why the minister was not allowed to speak even though he had promised to give him an opportunity. Consequently, the Speaker gave Minister Chinchurani a chance to speak. In protest, Kunjalikutty boycotted the speech, and members of the League and other parties also boycotted the House proceedings.

Earlier, Minister Chinchurani stood up and pointed out that V D Satheesan's allegation of dismissing Sathi amma of Puthupally was misleading to the congregation. The Speaker assured that the minister would be given time later but the ruling party members did not comply. Ministers K Rajan, M B Rajesh, Antony Raju, V Sivankutty, P Rajeev and others from the ruling party along with members like Joy, got up and gathered in the center. Consequently, the Leader of the Opposition concluded his speech. The Speaker repeatedly requested the ministers to remain in their seats, but it had no effect. In response, the opposition also moved to the center, raising slogans and pointing fingers at each other. The Speaker made significant efforts to calm down the members.
