CHENNAI: Sri Lankan citizens who were released from prison in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case can now return home. Murugan, Shantan, Jayakumar Robert and Payas are still in India despite being released from jail. The central government provided this information to the Madras High Court in response to a petition filed by Murugan's wife, Nalini.
Nalini, who had served a lengthy prison term in the case, was also released from jail. Subsequently, they returned to their home in Vellore. However, Murugan, Shanthan, Jayakumar Robert and Payas, being Sri Lankan citizens, were transferred to a special camp in Tiruchirappalli. Nalini then approached the court demanding that her husband Murugan be released and allowed to live with her.
The Central govt. informed the court that the four individuals who were released from jail have no objections to returning to Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka should issue the necessary passports to facilitate their return. However, the Centre also mentioned that they are still residing in the camp due to delays on the Sri Lankan side in providing the required documents.
