THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: M Vincent MLA said that Vizhinjam port, which is preparing to dock its first cargo ship, should be named after former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Vizhinjam port is the baby of UDF. The port became a reality due to the efforts of Oommen Chandy, hence the port should be named after him, the MLA demanded. He informed in a press conference that the matter has been brought to the attention of the government.

The MLA also alleged that permission was denied to a submission to be made in the House to name the Vizhinjam port after Oommen Chandy. 'I am not invited to the naming ceremony of the port tomorrow. MLAs and MPs are not included in the notice. The port is a living monument to Oommen Chandy' he said. The MLA also blamed that there was a delay in the project, which was supposed to be completed in December 2019.

At the same time, the capacity test of the tug that came to Vizhinjam to pull the first ship to the international port and bring it closer to the berth was successfully completed after a long wait. The tug which belongs to the Ocean Spirit company from Mumbai was tested on September 15 around 11 am. A tug is responsible for berthing a ship arriving at an international port mouth.
