The AIADMK's decision to end its alliance with the BJP in Tamil Nadu has not created much movement in the political circles. This alliance, which continued without making any major political gains, had become a liability for both parties. However, no one expected the curtain to fall so quickly. The possibility of not only the BJP but also the ADMK making at least a small gain in Tamil Nadu in the Lok Sabha elections to be held early next year has completely disappeared with the collapse of the alliance.
The last Lok Sabha election itself proved that ADMK and BJP are not even a small force in front of DMK which returned with increased strength. Only one of the thirty-nine Lok Sabha seats in the state were won by the ADMK. The same was later lost in the election case. The BJP's dream of making some gains in South India was thwarted in Tamil Nadu. As an ally of the BJP, the leaders of the ADMK escaped from many financial cases. The cases might be revived as the alliance is broken. Politics often determines the future of financial crimes.
The alliance faced issues ever since the appointment of former IPS officer K Annamalai as the Tamil Nadu BJP president. The elder Annamalai has quickly alienated the ADMK leaders to lead the party as per his wish without respecting the sentiments of his ally. Not only did he not follow the etiquette of a political alliance, he even publicly insulted the alliance leaders. He was not ready to give up the arrogance of the old police chief. Annamalai's lack of influence in politics was also a big setback for the alliance.
As elections approach, it is common for some old political alliances to collapse and new ones to form. Tamil Nadu is one of the states that has seen many such political alliances. When the dominant political alliance under the strong leadership of the DMK stands unopposed, many smaller parties will naturally want to stand with it. Most of the parties think that if they get a small gain, it is a profit.
BJP has also started to realize that there is a need for change in the existing approaches. The party leadership also does not think that things will be as easy as they think in 2024. The party has already released the two-phase list of candidates for the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections. It is noteworthy that the present Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan's name is not included in both. The explanation is that there should be no misinterpretation in the fact that Chauhan's name is not included when the lists are yet to come. This is also proof that the party is taking every step with utmost care. Although the party leadership considers it a political gain to be friends with the JDS in Karnataka, everyone knows how far the public support of Kumaraswamy and others will come.
