THRISSUR: Due to the Rs 5 crore corruption charge in LIFE mission flats in Wadakkanchery, uncertainty still looms for the many apartment complexes that have nearly reached completion. This has also battered the dream of many poor families, who were overjoyed about occupying a safe shelter in these apartments.
During the investigation of the infamous gold smuggling case, Rs 1 crore was found in the joint bank locker of Kerala CM’s former PS Sivashankar's chartered accountant and gold scam accused Swapna Suresh. It was later confirmed that this Rs 1 crore was deducted from the account of the LIFE mission MD Sathosh Eapan’s account. Minding the development, the construction work was stopped indefinitely.
It was also found that the crores received from the International Red Cross Society through the UAE Consulate to rehabilitate the flood victims in Kerala were diverted and were spent for individual needs. It was also assessed that it is illegal for Kerala to receive foreign aid directly.
Earlier there were conflicting statements saying the newly built LIFE mission apartments were for flood victims in Wadakkanchery while some others said this was for people enlisted in the LIFE scheme. After intrusion from the then MLA Anil Akkara, it was learned that six families affected by floods were allotted the apartment, so new names had to be selected from the LIFE scheme list.
It was also alleged that in the Rs 5 crore scam, Rs 4 crore was converted into dollars and smuggled abroad. Santhosh Eapan, MD of 'UniTac', which had the construction contract, said that 4.48 crore bribes were paid to people including Swapna.
