NEW DELHI: President Draupadi Murmu has approved the Women's Reservation Bill, thereby strengthening women's empowerment in the country. The Ministry of Law has issued a notification regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Act. The Vice President had previously signed the bill before it was handed over to the President.
Both the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha have passed this bill, which mandates the reservation of one-third of the total seats in the Lok Sabha and state legislatures for women. The bill was passed during a special session convened by Parliament with 215 members in favour and no objections raised.
However, the implementation of the female reservation will commence only after 2026. Union Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated that the census process is expected to be completed by 2026, and the law can only be put into effect once the census constituency process is finalized.
