KOCHI: Birthday celebrations ended in tragedy after the high speeded car carrying doctors jumped straight into the river. The local residents said the accident that killed the two doctors in Ernakulam was caused by the car driving ahead without knowing the end of the road. The two dead are Ajmal (28) of Kodungallur Mathilakam Pambinezhath and Kollam Palathara Thundil Adwaith (28). The two are doctors of Craft Hospital in Kodungallur. The two are classmates and best friends. The accident happened Sunday morning at 12.30 am in Gothuruth Kadalvathuruth. There were three doctors, a male nurse and a medical student in the car. Dr Khasik, male nurse Jismon and medical student Tamanna were rescued.
The accident occurred while they were returning to Kodungallur from Ernakulam after celebrating Dr Adwaith's birthday. From Kochi, one has to go to Kodungallur via North Paravur after reaching Poothakunnam. There is a junction half a kilometer ahead of the accident site. From there one has to turn right and then go to Kodungallur. However, the Google map pointed to the left. Those who survived the accident told the locals that they took the car to the river thinking it was a waterlogged place after the rain.
The speeding car jumped into the river. Abdul Haq, a local resident who saw this, immediately informed his friends over the phone. As it was raining heavily, they did not know what to do first. Got a rope and then tied it around Haq's waist and jumped into the river. He first rescued the woman from the car and then the other two. As the two dead were swept away by the current, could not jump or rescue them. As the car was over speeded, they may have not been able to apply the brake. It may have gone straight and fell into the water, the residents said.
The area has now been barricaded following the accident. The bodies were recovered at 3:30 in a search by the fire brigade. The bodies were shifted to the mortuary of the taluk hospital. The three survivors have been admitted at Craft Hospital.
