IMPHAL: CBI has arrested four people in the case of the murder of two students in Manipur. Two women and two men are among them. The arrested were identified as Paominlun Haokip, S. Malsawm Haokip, Lhingneichong Baite, and Tinneilhing Henthang. Two minor girls have been taken into custody.
Four persons were arrested from Churachandpur with the help of Manipur Police and Army. It is reported that the accused were brought to Imphal around 5.30 pm and were taken to Delhi by night. The reason for the rumours is that the CISF was deployed in large numbers at the Imphal airport during the departure of the Delhi-bound flight.
The pictures of Meitei students who went missing last June were circulated on social media last week. With this, riots broke out again in the state. The government handed over the investigation to the CBI following this.
It is indicated that the people who have been arrested belong to the Kuki sect. The arrested Lhingneichong Baite is a friend of the murdered girl. According to the investigation team, they are the ones who brought the students to the Kuki area. A 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old woman, who were in love, have been missing since July 6. They had eloped. Pictures of them being beaten and lying dead had come out last week.
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that he is happy to inform about the arrest of the accused. He added that necessary steps will be taken to ensure the death penalty for them. Biren Singh had said on Saturday that the accused would be arrested soon. An attempt was made to set Biren Singh's house on fire during the protest. BJP office was also set on fire. Protesters and police clashed several times in Imphal.
