New Zealand defeated the defending champions England by nine wickets in the opening match of the 2023 World Cup. New Zealand successfully chased down England's target of 283 runs in 36.2 overs with the loss of only one wicket winning with 82 balls to spare.

Deonna Conway and the young talent Rachin Ravindra made victory look easy for New Zealand. They formed a remarkable partnership of 273 runs for the second wicket. Rachin emerged as the star of the match with Conway scoring 152 runs off 121 balls including 19 fours and 3 sixes. On the other hand, Rachin scored his first ODI century amassing 112 runs off 96 balls which included 11 fours and five sixes. Sam Curran managed to take just one wicket for England.

New Zealand won the toss and chose to bowl first. England, batting first, scored 282 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in the allotted overs. Joe Root was the top scorer contributing 77 runs off 86 balls featuring four fours and a six.
