NEW DELHI: NewsClick Editor-in-Chief Prabir Purkayastha and HR Head Amit Chakraborty have approached the High Court seeking the quashing of the FIR in the UAPA case registered by the Delhi Police's Special Cell. They were both arrested in connection with the receipt of foreign aid for propagating in favour of China.

Advocate Kapil Sibal is representing both of them in court. Kapil has requested the bench chaired by Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma to urgently consider the matter. Kapil argued that the arrests of both individuals are illegal and violate the directives of the Supreme Court. A bench including Justice Sanjeev Narula has accepted the lawyer's request.

Meanwhile, the news portal NewsClick has strongly reacted to the arrests of Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty. NewsClick stated that the central government does not respect media freedom and has taken premeditated actions, including the arrests. Dissent is being labelled as anti-national by the central government which is accused of not acting in the interest of China. The Special Cell of the police has not provided any evidence of videos or news on the website in question. Instead, they are raising questions related to the Delhi riots and the farmers' strike. Officials at NewsClick have expressed their determination to continue fighting for media freedom and maintain full faith in the judiciary.

Prabir Purkayastha and Amit Chakraborty were apprehended by the police on Tuesday on charges of receiving foreign funds from individuals advocating for China's interests.
