KOCHI: High Court said that if the court rejects an application with reasonable grounds to speed up the trial of the case, it will lead to people losing faith in the justice system.
The court quashed the Kattakkada Magistrate Court's order rejecting the accused's plea to speed up the trial and directed it to reconsider. The petition of Sreejith and Gokul, natives of Thiruvananthapuram, was heard by Justice PV Kunjikrishnan.
Sreejith requested that the case be disposed of quickly as he was included in the PSC list for the appointment of last-grade servant. Gokul's complaint is that he applied for a passport to work abroad, but it was rejected on the grounds that there was a case. The Magistrate's Court did not allow the duo's plea to speed up the trial of their cases.
The application was rejected stating that 17,000 cases are pending and 6000 cases are more than five years old. The High Court opined that although it is true that there is a huge backlog of cases in the trial court, the plea of the petitioners to speed up the trial for the sake of livelihood should be considered.
