NEW DELHI: The Congress Working Committee on Monday passed a resolution to implement a caste census in the country. In a press conference called after the working committee meeting, Rahul Gandhi said that there is no politics in the caste census. He also alleged that the Prime Minister is undermining the schemes meant for the backward classes. Rahul Gandhi also pointed out that caste census is essential for the country.
By passing the resolution on the caste census, the Congress is putting pressure on the central government, which is keeping silent on the caste census. The caste census was the main topic of the discussion which lasted around 4 hours. Earlier some leaders, including Manu Abhishek Singhvi, had opposed the caste census. However, the resolution was unanimously accepted today in the working committee meeting.
When asked whether other parties in the INDIA alliance will support caste census, Rahul said, "Majority parties in the INDIA alliance has a favourable stand towards caste census. Even though some parties oppose it, we are not fascists and will not force anyone. We will go ahead with the steps to conduct caste census in Congress-ruled states."
Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramiah said that the Karnataka government will soon release the details of the survey conducted earlier in the state.
