KANHANGAD: Despite warnings of the police, there is no decrease in the victims of cyber frauds. An incident of extorting Rs 99,000 from a resident of Malakal in the name of renewing his credit card happened recently. The youth who was abroad earlier received a phone call saying that it was from SBI.


Demanded the details of the account for renewing as the tenure of the credit card had expired. Also asked the OTP number to renew the card online. After giving the number, the money was lost from the account.


The Rajapuram police have registered a case and an investigation has started. The youth did not find anything suspicious in the beginning as he usually receives calls from banks related to credit cards. However, the bank officials have also warned that calls coming from other than the official numbers of the concerned bank branches should not be trusted and the OTP should not be given to the caller under any circumstances.

The woman was made to pay the amount after asking her to first deposit a certain amount in order to get a job, on the pattern of foreign jobs. Recently, a native of Palawayal paid around Rs 1.15 lakh as tax for bringing a gift of 25 lakh dollars from abroad.

Loses 50,000 in a single click
A youth lost money after he installed a loan app called Dhani on his mobile after seeing the promise of getting a loan of lakhs on a single click. After installing the app, he was asked to pay Rs 58,560 in various categories as loan processing fee. The trust of the youth was gained through several phone calls and WhatsApp chats. The youth filed a complaint with the Ambalathara police along with the related phone numbers as loan was not obtained even after a month of paying the fee.
