NEW DELHI: Late Tuesday evening, news surfaced about the death of Nobel laureate and esteemed economist Amartya Sen. The purported news of the death was shared through social media platform X by 2023 economist Nobel winner Claudia Dale Goldin.

With pouring condolences from all around the world, Sen’s daughter Nandana Deb Sen approached PTI to clear the air surrounding the news. Nandana confirmed that her father is in good health and lamented all those factoids as ‘fake news’.

“I urge everyone not to spread misinformation” Nandana requested through PTI.

As per the latest report, the news came from a fake account that was running in the name of Nobel laureate Claudia Dale Goldin.

A meister in the domain of economics, Amartya Sen is also a Bharat Ratna recipient. His groundbreaking work has not just resorted to the field of economics but it helped combat social inequality, and improve the education sector in India. His study of famines also helped reshape the welfare economics in the country. Sen is a firebrand critic of contemporary Indian politics and was also at the receiving end of political mudslinging from the current ruling elite.

In his twilight years, Sen preferred living a serene life in Harvard along with his family and is currently settled in the United Kingdom.
