It is normal for the state governments to announce prizes for those who secure prestigious positions in national and international sporting events. To retain the talent in the field of sports, they are also provided suitable employment. Many other states encourage athletes at a much higher level than we do. These states take the approach of showering medal winners with prizes in international meets. The reason for expressing this now is because some of the Malayalee players who clinched medals for India in the Asian Games that concluded last Sunday noticed the derision.

Their sadness and anger were that the government were not even ready to praise their brilliant achievements for the country through hard work. In any meeting held outside the country, when the Malayalee players make an achievement, ministers and others come thronging to congratulate them and welcome them. For some reason, even the minister in charge of the sports department did not come forward to congratulate the sports talents who gave proud moments to the country through the Asian Games. Badminton player Prannoy had reacted to leaving the state to protest against the neglect shown to the sports sector. Muhammad Anas, who won gold in China, also responded similarly.

The growth of the sports sector must give rewards and better jobs to those who win medals in international sports competitions. Although the state's attitude towards sports is not much better, after every meet, the government announces awards to the Malayalee players who have achieved success. The minister in charge of the sports department V Abdurahiman has assured.

The minister also explained that the cabinet should decide in this regard. But without waiting for the cabinet to meet, shouldn't the sports minister be able to make a statement that will bring joy and confidence to the players? Winners in national and international meets have been awarded earlier. Rather than adopting a different approach every time, a precise standard can be formulated in this regard. If the amount is fixed in the case of a gold medal, silver and bronze, the declaration will be easier. The reward can also be announced before the start of the meet. This will eliminate the possibility of unnecessary controversies and conflicts.

The government has not yet been able to give many of the Malayalee players who came to the fore in the last Asian Games the jobs they deserve. Due to qualifications and other technical reasons, their appointments are being delayed. In a state where hundreds of political appointments are being made, it is a crime to prevent sports talent from doing so. The cabinet should take action to correct it.
