KOCHI: Lower court female judges can now wear a white saree with a black blouse or opt for a salwar kameez or shirt and pants in the same colour. The High Court in response to a petition by female judges has updated the official dress code and issued a notification.

Around 100 female judges filed a request with the High Court administration citing the hot weather and cramped courtrooms as reasons for revising the dress code. Subsequently, the High Court District Judicial Registrar, P J Vincent revised the dress code. The existing dress code had been in effect since October 1, 1970.

New dress code options

A white high-necked/collared salwar with a black kameez, a black full-sleeved coat, a neckband and a black gown.

A white high-necked blouse/collared shirt, black full-length skirt/pants, a black full-sleeve coat, a neckband and a black gown.

Only these specific colours are allowed. Judicial officers are expected to maintain a dignified appearance.
