ABU DHABI: A slight earthquake of magnitude 1.6 was felt in UAE at 6.15 a.m. local time. The National Center for Meteorology (NCM) said the epicentre of the earthquake was in the Dibba region of Fujairah. No damage was reported in the earthquake.
The epicentre was five kilometres below ground level. Residents of the Dibba area said they felt the tremors. At the same time, the authorities clarified that there was no cause for concern and the earthquake was of low intensity. The Director of the Seismology Department, Khalifa Al Ebri, had earlier told the media that people living in the UAE do not need to be afraid of earthquakes and that they are safe. Earthquakes happen two or three times a year, but people often don't know about them. They also said that earthquakes of such low intensity are detected through sensors.
Meanwhile, there was another earthquake in Afghanistan. A magnitude of 6.3 was recorded in the Herat province in western Afghanistan this morning. Just four days ago, an earthquake caused the death of more than 2,000 people. About five lakh people live here.
