NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court collegium has decided to transfer Acting Chief Justice M V Muralidharan of the Manipur High Court. He issued a judgment that led to the Manipur conflict. Justice Muralidharan will be transferred to the Calcutta High Court. His request to be transferred to the Madras High Court or to remain in Manipur has been rejected by the collegium.
A five-member collegium led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud stated that the judge's request has no merit. On October 9, the transfer recommendation was sent to the central government. Following this, Justice Muralidharan sent a letter to the collegium requesting reconsideration. However, the collegium has reaffirmed its decision by sending the file to the central government once again.
Last April, Justice MV Muralidharan suggested that the Manipur Government consider granting Scheduled Caste status to Meitei tribes. This suggestion led to an ongoing conflict between Meitei and Kuki factions. The central government has not yet issued a notification regarding the collegium's recommendation to appoint Justice Siddharth Mridul of the Delhi High Court as the Chief Justice of the Manipur High Court. The government informed the Supreme Court on Tuesday that it has approved the appointment and will soon issue a notification. This decision comes after the court strongly criticized the delay in the collegium recommendation sent on July 5.
