DAMASCUS: Even as its war with Hamas continues, Israel on Thursday carried out airstrikes in Syria. Syrian media reported that Israel attacked major airports in Damascus, the capital of Syria, and Aleppo, a part of northern Syria. Reports are also claiming that the Syrian Air Force has launched a counter-attack against Israel. The attack took place on the runways of the airports. Flight services were cancelled following the incident.

Although massive damages were caused in the airstrike in Aleppo airport, it is reported that there are no casualties. Meanwhile, no further information is available about the attack on the Damascus airport. During the 12-year Syrian civil war, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Iran-backed armed groups and Hezbollah. Israel launched the attack on Syria at a time when the blockade was tightening on the Gaza Strip. Recently, Israel had launched a shelling attack on Syria.

Meanwhile, Israel has warned that it will not allow basic resources or other humanitarian aid to Gaza without the release of those held hostages by Hamas. Israel has blocked the supply of water, fuel and electricity to Gaza. Palestine's thermal plant was shut down on Wednesday after it ran out of fuel, leaving Gaza in darkness.
