KOCHI: There are widespread complaints that 148 students of the state, who passed the MBBS from China 16 months ago after overcoming the Covid crisis, are not allowed internship by Kerala Medical Council. Despite the approval of many other states as per the instructions of the National Medical Commission, Kerala is delaying the decision.

Those who returned during the Covid time and participated in the online class and completed the course in June 2022 are awaiting approval. Only those who have done internship (house surgery) in Kerala can practice here. Internship must be completed within two years of passing. Those who want to practice here are waiting for permission.

On May 9, the National Medical Commission (NMC) granted relaxation to those who have studied abroad to do internship in their own country in the wake of Covid and the war in Ukraine. This is how other states have given permission.

Decision on 18

The Kerala Medical Council said that the permission was not given because of the ambiguity regarding the days on which the post-Covid returnees attended classes directly. NMC has been informed about this. The NMC meeting to be held on 18 will discuss this. Kerala Medical Council Registrar KR Balasubramaniam said permission will be given as per NMC's position.
