PUNE: Dream 11 is a popular fantasy gaming app in India. It became a hit with aggressive advertising featuring top stars including former Indian cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Many people won big money through the app and the news of such winnings went viral on social media.
Now, reports of a policeman winning Rs 1.5 crore in Dream 11 and the subsequent issues he faced has gone viral on social media. After winning the prize money, sub-inspector Somnath Zende thought that all the problems in his life were over, but it was the beginning of more problems.
The police have announced an investigation against Zende after the money reached his account. A departmental inquiry has been announced pointing out that he participated in a fantasy game like gambling while holding a responsible position like a police sub-inspector. With this, Zende, who thought that he would be able to pay off the house loan and set aside money for his children's education, is now in a situation where he does not know what to do.
"Can one participate in such online games while working in the police department? Does this follow the rules? Is this game legal? Can one talk in the media about the money received in this way? Is all this within the rules. All this will be investigated. The investigation has been given to DCP Swapna Gore and appropriate action will be taken after a report is submitted," said Satish Maane, ACP, Pimpri Chinchwad.
Dream 11 is worth Rs 7535 crore and is India's first gaming startup. The company is facing several legal issues alleging that the game is gambling. Founded in 2008, the company now has over 110 million users.
