THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The capital city is literally submerged in heavy rain that has been lashing for hours. Many parts of the city such as Manacaud, Thekkummoodu, Chakkai, Gowreeshapattom and Ulloor are flooded. Water entered houses in Thekkummoodu area. 120 families are staying here. The incessant rain filled the nearby streams and entered the houses by midnight. Reports said steps to shift the people from here will start soon. It is also reported that many vehicles were damaged due to waterlogging on Chakkai Road.

Technopark flooded for the first time in history after the Thettiyar river overflowed. The Gayathri building is under water. It is reported that many vehicles here are also under water. Traffic through the main gate is prohibited. Most of the establishments in Technopark are closed as it is Sunday. Firefighters shifted three families to a safe place after the water rose from the Thettiyar stream. Many girls are stranded in the hostel here after the water entered from Thettiyar stream near Phase 3 campus. Steps are being taken to rescue them.

In Sreekaryam, the protection wall collapsed and fell on top of the house in the heavy rain. The wall on the back of the Gulati Institute of Finance and Taxation fell on top of four nearby houses. No casualty has been reported. The incident happened around 12.30 am. A youth was injured when the wall of his house in Pothencode collapsed. Arun, a native of Kalluvila was injured. He has been admitted to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College with leg injuries. A house has damaged after the wall collapsed at Pullampara near Venjaramood. Water has entered houses in Maruthoor near Mannanthala, Puthenppalam and Ambalathinkkara.

Monsoon is intensifying in the state. Rains are intensifying due to the presence of cyclonic circulation over South East Arabian Sea and Central East Arabian Sea. According to the Central Meteorological Department, there is a possibility of moderate/average rain with thunder and lightning in the state for the next five days and heavy rain at isolated places till October 18 with wind speed of 30-40 kmph.

16-10-2023: Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

17-10-2023: Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

18-10-2023: Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki and Wayanad.

Yellow alert has been announced in the districts. A chance of isolated heavy rain is predicted. Heavy rain means rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

Heavy rains are likely in hilly areas as yellow alert has been issued in Kerala today and for the coming days. Waterlogging is also possible in low-lying areas and cities. Public and government agencies should be very careful.
