THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Opposition leader V D Satheeshan made the audience not lose sight of the fact that the Vizhinjam International Port was the brainchild of late congress leader Oommen Chandy.

Satheesan stated that despite the accusations of corruption of Rs 6000 crores, Oommen Chandy did not falter and stood firm for Vizhinjam. Satheeshan was speaking at the official inauguration ceremony of Vizhinjam International Port.

The opposition leader also voiced support for the locals in Vizhinjam as he said the local residents should not be pushed into slums or cement warehouses for the development to take place. V D Satheesan's felicitation speech at the inauguration ceremony of the Vizhinjam project was rife with praises for former chief minister Oommen Chandy.

The opposition leader’s implicit criticism of the government was at a stage that also had Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in attendance. The opposition leader also congratulated the Pinarayi government for completing the Vizhinjam port.

“Oommen Chandy did not flinch despite the corruption allegation of Rs 6000 crores. All necessary permissions for the port have been procured. Development should change the lifestyle of people but it should not push local residents into slums and godowns.” V D Satheeshan opined.

“During the Oommen Chandy government, Rs 472 crore was earmarked for the rehabilitation of coastal fishermen. No tear should fall when Vizhinjam port becomes a reality. Rehabilitation of people affected by development is very important," VD Satheesan said.
