ALAPPUZHA: Fields in Kuttanad and upper Kuttanad regions that were ripe for second crop harvesting got submerged in water due to the heavy rains that lashed across the state. The inclement weather stopped the awaited harvest season in the Alappuzha district. Due to the high rainfall, the Thottapally spillway, Andhakaranazhi estuary and Thanneermukkam bund are seeing high current water flow to the sea.
The fire force pumped out the water that had even entered a funeral home in Kakkazhom, Ambalapuzha. Flooding also caused distress to shrimp farmers in the northern regions.
Cherthala experienced the heaviest rainfall on Saturday. The region recorded 200 mm rainfall on this day. All 14 shutters of the Thottapally spillway have been opened. Due to the construction of the national highway, the water flow stopped and deviated into the nearby houses and institutions, that eventually got flooded. Based on the rain, the Disaster Management Authority has issued a warning to the entire district.
