THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Heavy rains lashed across the state capital for twelve hours creating a flood-like situation. Technopark area was submerged in water.

Those trapped in hostels, houses and hostels of University Kariyavattam campus were rescued by the fire brigade and fishermen who came in boats.

Several institutions, including hospitals and schools, and KSEB's 110 KV sub-station at Kazhakoottam were submerged. Widespread power outages affected operations, including that of VSSC. Roads were submerged and traffic was disrupted. As the rivers overflowed, there was water over the bridges.

The Kochuveli station was submerged in water, delaying the Kerala Express by seven hours. Other trains are also delayed. Waterlogging has formed in many parts where the National Highway is being developed. Houses and institutions were flooded. Several walls collapsed.

The Thettiyar, Amayizhanchan and Parvati Puthanaar overflowed and submerged the city. Six houses were completely destroyed and 11 houses were partially destroyed.

Acres of crops were destroyed in rural areas.

Many families were shifted to relief camps. 21 relief camps were opened. 875 people were relocated. Ministers K. Rajan, V. Sivankutty, Antony Raju and G. R. Anil visited the affected areas.

Hospital flooded, bodies shifted

The ground floor of the Cosmopolitan Hospital was completely submerged after the Thettiar overflowed. The four bodies in the morgue were shifted to another hospital. As water entered the electric unit, the power supply was disconnected. The operations here were done using generators. Oxygen cylinders also had to be delivered. The blood and equipment in the blood bank were destroyed.

595.7 mm of rain

# Thiruvananthapuram received 595.7 mm of rain within twelve hours. A red alert is declared when there is a chance of more than 204 mm of rain. The heavy rainfall is due to a cyclone formed over the South East Arabian Sea.

# The Central Water Commission has declared orange alert for Karamana river and yellow alert for Neyyar and Vamanapuram rivers today. Coastal residents should be cautious.

#Today Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Idukki districts are on orange alert and other districts are on yellow alert. Cyclone over Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep will turn into low pressure on Tuesday. It will then move towards west and northwest direction and become a low pressure
