THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: There is rain alert in the state today. Central Meteorological Department has issued orange alert in Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki. There is a chance of very heavy rain at isolated places. Heavy rain means 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain in 24 hours. Other districts are on yellow alert today.

District Collector Geromic George has announced a holiday for educational institutions including professional colleges in Thiruvananthapuram today due to heavy rains on Saturday night which led to inundation in many places and following heavy rain warning.


Meantime, the Central Meteorological Department has informed that it is not advisable to go fishing in Kerala Lakshadweep shores. However, the Central Meteorological Department has informed fishermen through a cautionary advisory that there is no disruption to fishing in the Karnataka coast.


The Central Meteorological Department has predicted strong winds and bad weather conditions in Gulf of Mannar, Kanyakumari coast and south Tamil Nadu coast today with a speed of 40 to 45 kmph and at some occasions up to 55 kmph.


The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Research Center has also warned that high waves and storm surges are likely to occur on Kerala coast till 11.30 pm on Monday and 0.9 to 1.9 meters on south Tamil Nadu coast till 11.30 pm.
