food

Food culture around the world is very strange. Rice, sambar and biryani are important to us South Indians but when we come to North India wheat and other grains become important. In some countries like China, it is customary to eat animals both cooked and uncooked. Europeans and Americans do not like foods that are too spicy. There are countries that eat only vegetables, and countries that eat more seafood and meat. The food culture that exists here will surprise anyone in our country.

However, that surprise will increase again when you know that there are many varieties of food in India itself. Silkworms, dog meat, frog legs, and to add to the variety of cuisines there is even a special bhajji made with cannabis in India. Variety is not only in fish and meat. In some places, food is prepared even with spoiled plant ingredients. Let's get to know some of them.

Jadoh

Jadoh is a pulao-like dish of the northeastern states of India. If you ask why Jadoh is considered a strange food, it is because of its main ingredient. Along with rice, the main ingredient in Jadoh is the blood and intestines of a pig or chicken. This food is mainly consumed in Meghalaya.

Phan Pyut

Potatoes are a favourite for most people. Potatoes are abundantly used in our country as masala for puri, stuffing in samosas and for bajji in chai shops. However, in the northeastern states, potatoes are prepared in a different way. Instead of picking and using them as soon as they are ready to eat, there is a dish where the potatoes are left to rot in the ground and then seasoned with spices to make them delicious. That is Phan Pyut.

Dog meat

The dogs that we love and care for are food sources in many places including Nagaland. Tribals in Mizoram and Manipur also include dogs in their diet.
