GUWAHATI: CBI has filed a charge sheet in the case of stripping Kuki women and parading them naked in Manipur. Six persons including a minor are the main accused in the case. The charge sheet was filed in Guwahati CBI court.
The incident took place on May 4th in Kangpokpi district of Manipur. The video footage of the incident was released in July after the state's internet system was restored. Strong protests happened across the country after the footage went viral, following which the Supreme Court transferred the case to the CBI. The chargesheet was filed today after the CBI investigation found that the accused arrested by the Manipur police were involved in the incident. Further investigation is underway, including identification of other accused involved in the case. CBI has informed that a case has been registered against the accused under various sections, including charges of gang rape, murder, humiliation of womanhood and criminal conspiracy.
A Kuki sect member was also found burnt to death in Manipur. The police said that the tragic incident took place on May 4 the same day when two young women were stripped and paraded naked. The video of the man being burnt to death was released on the 11th of this month. The incident took place at Nongpok Sekmai in Thoubal district, which is dominated by the Meitei sect. Police confirmed that the man who was killed was 37-year-old Laldenthanga Khongsai. He is a resident of the Kuki-Somi dominated area of Kangpokpi. The seven-second video shows a man in a black shirt and pants lying injured and being burned by a crowd. People can be heard talking around, but only two people's feet can be seen in the video. Someone can be heard asking not to take a video. Sounds of violence including gunshots can be heard in the video. There was a huge protest after the release of the video.
