LUCKNOW: After suffering two consecutive defeats, five-time champions Australia clinched their first victory in this edition of the ICC Cricket World Cup. Australia defeated Sri Lanka by five wickets in the match held at Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on Monday. This is Sri Lanka's third defeat in this World Cup.

Sri Lanka, which won the toss and went into bat, were bowled out for 209 runs in 43.3 overs. In reply, the Aussies reached the target in 35.2 overs. Openers Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka gave a good start to the Lankans by scoring 125 runs in 21.4 overs. However, the batters that followed failed to capitalise on the good start provided by the openers. In no time, the Lankan batting order crumbled and was bundled out for a mere 209 runs. Spinner Adam Zampa took four wickets, while pacers Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins got two wickets each.

Chasing 210 runs, the Aussies lost Warner (11) and Steve Smith (0) very early. However, opener Mitchell Marsh (51), Labuschagne (40), Josh Inglis (58) and Glenn Maxwell (30) batted responsibly and guided their team to victory with nearly 14 overs remaining.
