NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has postponed the case regarding the re-appointment of the Chancellor of Kannur University. The case is now awaiting judgment after hearing all arguments. During the hearing, the Supreme Court questioned the state government about the re-appointment of people over 60 as Vice Chancellors.
This inquiry came up while the Supreme Court was reviewing petitions challenging Dr Gopinath Ravindran's re-appointment as the VC of Kannur University. Dr Premachandran Keezhoth, a member of the Kannur University Senate, and Shino P. Jose, a member of the Academic Council, brought these petitions to question Dr Gopinath Ravindran's re-appointment.
The petitioners had previously argued that the initial appointment of the Kannur VC did not adhere to UGC rules. Their point is that a re-appointment based on this cannot be valid. However, Dr Gopinath Ravindran stated in his affidavit that his re-appointment followed UGC rules.
Dr Gopinath mentioned that his first appointment as Vice Chancellor of Kannur University adhered to UGC rules, so there's no need to repeat the same steps for re-appointment. He also clarified that there's no age limit for re-appointment, and he is eligible because he served as VC once before. After considering these arguments, the Supreme Court questioned the state government on the matter.
