NEW DELHI: The court found all the five accused guilty in the murder of Soumya Viswanathan, a Malayali journalist. The Delhi court found Ravi Kapoor, Amit Shukla, Baljith Malik, Akshay Kumar and Ajay Sethi guilty in the case. The quantum of sentence will be pronounced later. The first four were held guilty of murder and loot and the fifth is held guilty of helping others. They were held guilty under provisions of Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act (MCOCA).
Soumya Viswanathan was killed on September 30, 2008 at Vasant Vihar in Delhi. Her body was found in the car and she was shot on her head. The Delhi Police got the crucial evidence in Soumya's murder during the investigation related to another case. The clue was found while investigating the murder of Jigisha Ghose, an IT employee and a native of Faridabad. Jigisha was killed months after Soumya's murder. During interrogation, police found their links with Soumya murder.
The police found that the accused committed the murder during robbery attempt. After completing the investigation, a 620-page charge sheet was submitted to the court in 2009.
Soumya's mother responded that she wants life imprisonment for the accused. Soumya is the daughter of Vishwanathan of Kuttipuram Perishanoor Kizhipally Meleveettil and Madhavi, staying in Delhiās Vasant Kunj. Her schooling was at Delhi Carmel School and she graduated from Jesus & Mary College. She had worked in The Pioneer and CNN-IBN. She died while working as a producer in Headlines Today. Her sister is Shubha Viswanath.
