Rarely do people achieve legendary status in their lifetime. VS Achuthanandan is a towering figure in the eyes of both supporters and opponents in Kerala. For Malayalis, the initials V S represent the struggles and sacrifices made for the people. Now bedridden due to age-related ailments, VS is about to turn a hundred years old.
VS, who's about to reach the century mark has consistently fought against corruption and abuses of power regardless of political affiliations. Some who betrayed the people and sold out the state's interests faced the consequences of his relentless pursuit of justice. VS, often compared to a pillar of fire exposed the true faces of many leaders. Over time, he became a trusted leader for the majority of ordinary people in the state transcending political boundaries. It's unlikely that Kerala will see another leader who garners such widespread appeal in politics.
VS Achuthanandan who had only primary education is cherished as someone who unwaveringly stood for justice and truth until his last breath. This faith remains unshaken even as he lies silently in his bed. His image is often likened to Bhishma Pithamahan from the Mahabharata lying on his bed while the war rages on. VS, a one-man army tackled numerous contentious issues that dominated Kerala's political discourse in the last fifty years, including Mullaperiyar, Palm Oil, Idamalayar, Graphite, Mathikettan, Munnar and more. Notably, it was CPM that provided the platform for his endeavours.
Born to farmer parents in Punnapra, Alappuzha, VS faced early parental loss. Joining the communist movement led by P Krishna Pillai at just sixteen, he later became the opposition leader and even served as the chief minister unwavering in his commitment to the movement's principles. VS took part in the freedom and revolutionary struggles enduring severe physical torture and imprisonment. He left the National Council of the Communist Party in 1964, eventually founding the CPM and earned a reputation as the best opposition leader Kerala has ever seen.
Even while serving as the Chief Minister and facing tight constraints, he was known for not compromising on mistakes. He had a reputation among ordinary people, even children and housewives, for being a leader who could correct wrongs if they were reported to him. VS Achuthanandan is a truly remarkable figure. Kerala Kaumudi extends its warm wishes on his centenary.
