THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: T Geenakumari, the former prominent leader of the SFI received an apology from the policeman who had beaten her 29 years ago. George who was the Sub-Inspector of the Palakkad railway police station at that time personally came to express his regret. Today, Geenakumari serves as a public prosecutor and is the vice president of the Democratic Women's Association.
The incident occurred on November 15, 1994 during a period of intense student protests led by the SFI after the Koothuparambu shooting. Geenakumari was a key figure in a massive protest by SFI workers in front of the state secretariat in the capital city.
Around 12:15 pm, the police initiated a lathi charge and during this, AR George's lathi struck Geenakumari on her forehead causing her head to bleed. Geenakumari's unyielding dedication to her cause sparked significant discussion later. At that time, she also served as the chairperson of the Kerala University Union.
George, in a trembling voice expressed his regret saying "I came here because my heart ached. I apologize." Geenakumari responded "George, you've come… “She posted a note on Facebook yesterday stating that this was not at all needed. Thank you, my friend.
Accompanied by SI CP Baburaj, an old SFI member and a police association representative, George visited the court office and later spoke to Geenakumari at the Mahila Association office. George mentioned that he had not been involved in any lathi charges since that incident.
